Secure information can leak through electromagnetic waves?
- Yes, questions are now being raised regarding information displayed on a monitor leaking out through weak electromagnetic waves emanating from PC hardware.
- An experiment: The picture below displays an image where a standard monitor, located on the right, is having its information being intercepted on the left monitor. The monitor on the right's image was intercepted using an antenna - located at the bottom of the picture - by analyzing weak electromagnetic waves emanating from its PC enclosure and cables.

(Picture: A research result conducted by NiCT)
- Confidential or private information displayed on your monitor is at risk of leaking
- As equipment for analyzing information becomes more powerful as well as smaller thereby making it harder to detect, we believe that information stolen by analyzing leakage in electromagnetic waves will become a serious threat in the near future.
CrypType: New software that provides a stronger measure against information leakage through electromagnetic waves
- We, Beyond IT Co., Ltd., successfully developed a novel software technology called CrypType through a cooperative research with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, Japan (NiCT).
- The CrypType technology makes graphic reproduction of displayed images difficult, even when the emanating electromagnetic waves are analyzed, by using our unique font raster operation and gradating technique.
- The following figure shows a displayed image that CrypType technology is applied.

(Note: This figure is an image from a prototype.
We are measuring the anti-leaking effect.)
Advantages of CrypType
- Much lower cost than a hardware-based solution
- No need to use heavy and unwieldy electromagnetic shields
- Compatible with existing PCs. It is unnecessary to rebuild current IT infrastructures
- Flexible strength control about the anti-leaking effect
Integration with diverse PC applications
- The CrypType technology can be integrated with many kinds of applications.
- Example: As an add-in, CrypType can be integrated with Microsoft Office Word 2007. By doing this, users can securely create documents without a fear of information leakage. (figure below)
The same document can also be sent securely to anyone. The recipient can view the contents of the sent document by downloading a free plug-in.
When the recipient opens a CrypTyped document, the following message is shown instead of the original contents to prevent information leaking by regular fonts.
- Our software will protect the original information contained in the document and prevent it from leaking out via electromagnetic waves.
- The original contents of the document can be seen after installing the free CrypType viewer plug-in.
- The sender of the document gains peace of mind, knowing their information is secure and can only be viewed by someone using the CrypType plug-in.
- From a marketing perspective, this means knowledge of CrypType with grow organically by word-of-mouth. The more people that send their file with CrypType technology, the more people will need to download the free CrypType viewer in order to see the important file. CrypType has its marketing mechanism built-in. (Patent pending)
New technology to the growing so-called EMSEC, $357 million market in US and Japan combined*.
Our estimates show that the US market continues to be overwhelmingly larger than Japanese one.
* Estimation projected in 2005
Note 1: The market size data until 2009 is based on
research from Nomura Research Institute.
Note 2: The market size data until 2006 is based on research from Fuji
Keizai Co., Ltd.
Note 3: The market size data from 2007 to 2009 is our estimation based
upon current data.
